Blizzard

If indoors:

  • Stay calm and await instructions from the Emergency Coordinator.

  • Stay Indoors!

If there is no heat:

  • Close off unneeded rooms or areas.

  • Stuff towels or rags in cracks under doors.

  • Cover windows at night.

  • Stay hydrated and eat.

  • Layer clothing.

If trapped in a vehicle:

  • Stay in the car: This is the safest option as your car provides shelter from the elements and is easier to spot for rescuers.

  • Run the engine periodically: Run your car's engine for about 10 minutes every hour to generate heat, but remember to crack a window slightly to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.

  • Clear the exhaust pipe: Regularly clear snow from the exhaust pipe to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.

  • Use your hazard lights: Turn on your hazard lights to alert other drivers of your location.

  • Stay warm: Wear layers of clothing, use blankets if available, and huddle with other passengers to conserve body heat.

  • Conserve your phone battery: Only use your phone for emergency calls to avoid draining the battery.

  • Signal for help: If possible, try to wave down other vehicles or use a reflective signal device.

When to leave your car:

  • Immediate danger:

If your car is in immediate danger, like sliding off a cliff, then leave and move to a safer location.

  • Reaching help:

If you can safely reach a building or populated area within a short distance, consider leaving your car.
