Chemical Spill Response

When a location has a hazardous materials release, containment is key. During a spill, we have three main concerns; employee health, environmental health, and the problem area increasing.

Guidance

Containment

  • If safely able to do so, contain the spill utilizing the emergency spill kits. Special focus should be given to protecting storm drains and all areas off ramp. If a chemical enters a drain or soil area, it becomes very costly and difficult to clean up.

Response

  • If the spill is large (see list at the bottom of this page) you must contact the Fire Department to assist with the clean up and to assess the emergency.

  • Immediately after, the Safety Department must be notified utilizing the hotline at 216.797.8170

  • If professional clean up is needed, SafetyKleen Emergency Response should be contacted at 888-ER-KLEEN (888-375-5336).

Spill Procedures

  • Contain the spill with available equipment (e.g., pads, booms, absorbent pillows, etc.).

  • Secure the area and alert other site personnel

  • Do not attempt to clean the spill unless trained to do so

  • Attend to injured personnel and call for medical assistance if required

  • Evacuate building as necessary

  • Obtain the SDS via this link, and handle the spill IAW the instructions in the SDS
